FROM TIME TO TIME
An original show created by CAT Youth Theatre

In November CAT Youth Theatre member interviewed elders about their memories of being young, and to ask them to reflect on the changes that have occurred over time. Those conversations provoked much discussion and thought, and the results have now been put into this original show.

  2. I went to see the show this afternoon with Eri, Yoon, Fumi and Pauline. We had a great time and talked a lot about the show. Now, I would like to hear your comments about it. Please respond to the following questions:

    1. What did you think about the way they told the story - with some dialogue (spoken word) as well as a lot of non-verbal communication (movement, music, and dance) and with no props or set.
    2. What did the show make you think about? (What was the theme or message of the show?)

  3. I enjoyed the play pretty much. Thank you for giving me the chance to see this play.
To respond to the two questions above.....

    1. The way they expressed themselves was so creative. There was no fancy set, non special costumes (except for the tux for boys & wedding dress). Because of those things, it kept me focus on what they are trying to tell us in each scene. Especially, non verbal communication kept me so busy that I could understand what each scene was describing. It requires actors to be skillful in their expression and I think they did a great job with that.

    2. I think the message of the play is to appreciate what we have now. "Do we really think of the price that our ancestors paid? Don't we take it for granted? "Those were the questions that I asked myself throughout the play. By showing the tremendous change that New York has seen, we can see our positions objectively and we can ask ourselves if we deserve all the technological advances and conveniences that we have. Was the change itself really a good thing for us? I could enjoy seeing the good old times in New York. I just wonder how they organized all the parts that they brought into the play. There are 34 young actors in it. How could they have come up with the one idea that they all agreed on when there are so many people? If it all came from one director, I would understand. I am interested in how the process of "play building" went among these actors.

  5. The show was totally enjoyable. My answer to Pavla's question is...

    1. I think their devising work was really great. They have strong images about what they are trying to describe. Because of that common image, we audience could understand the scene without any sets or props.
And the balance between verbal expression and non-verbal performance seemed good rate.

    2. I was impressed that teenagers are concerning about their environment and the future. That theme was very interesting.
As a younger generation of the society, I thought myself as being responsible for the future. And I always worry about it. Sometimes that pressure hurts me and makes me tired. But I noticed that those performers also have awareness for some social issues. And they seems struggling to deal with it, facing the severe reality.
I realized that this world would be more complicated in their time, and next generation is seeking something to believe in...

  6. The play was awesome. My daughter and I all enjoyed it. It's very impressive that the teen actors expressed so many thoughtful and complicated themes in an hour and a half.
They used easy dialogues and verbal communications to describe the story, and it make me feel like our real life. I felt wonderful with the actors, and I seemed like following each scene moving to the neighborhood and sharing the common fate.
Our ancestors changed society a lot in different ways. What can we do to give society a good future?

  7. The play was so nice. I couldn’t catch whole dialogue, but I was able to see the big picture of the show because of the performers’ expression. They mixed well comical and dramatic factor, I laughed a lot and moved. Every episode was familiar to me. It seemed my family’s and neighbors’ story although I’m from another country. Korea is also faced with similar situation. It seems to older generation like my grand mother that the world is changing so fast and a lot.
The new is not good always.

  8. 1- My favorite scene was one of the first: when they silently mined old jobs and tools. This scene really attracted my full attention and push me in the past or rather in my imaginary past. It called childhood memories, movie and book references. It’s very interresting because it remind me some images and even feeling.
The use of recording music made the scenes dynamic and coherent. But I didn’t like all the dancing and singing parts.
